What is Pilates?

Developed and refined over the last 80 years, pilates based exercise is a progressive practice of strengthening and toning that addresses the core musculature of the body. Pilates embraces non-impact, total body movements that resemble the functional movements we use in everyday activities. Performed regularly, it improves balance, posture, overall fitness and athletic performance, and helps prevent injury.

Unlike conventional exercises, pilates focuses on strengthen the deepest innermost muscles of the skeletal system. Using proper alignment, the exercises isolate the smaller postural muscles that surround and protect joints, helping to minimize joint stress. Muscle toning and strengthening is a natural by-product as the muscles tighten without adding bulk.

The program enables people to exercise frequently and challenge themselves mentally and physically, which explains why it is referred to as "intelligent exercise with profound results" (Stott Pilates).

Clients of Pilates training report incredible improvements in their abdominal tone and back strength as well as noticeable improvements in their upper body strength and posture. The physical and mental challenges that one overcomes from regular Pilates training greatly enhances self-confidence making it for many a “health addition” that they look forward to every week.
